Photos

Photography left me at the station a long time ago, but when the wildlife walks up and slaps you on the ass to get your attention, you’re bound to catch a few decent moments. If you look closely, you’ll find a couple of the photos below featured in – The Deer Above the Foothills.

Fall of 2016. This six-point buck is all stud, leaving little doubt that “the buck stops here,” or there, or just about any place that he wants.

It’s a good idea to look around a bit before heading outside. This guy is probably not interested in you much, but he might have other ideas about your cat or small dog. In case you missed him, this is the same guy in the picture – top left.

The sun trying to shine through the smoke. High Park Fire 2012.

Ann names all the critters out here as if they were pets. This one’s ‘Chippy.’ To me, it looks more like a ‘Ralph,’ but Ann has the final say on who’s who around here.

This guy was moving in under the front porch, so we had to catch and release him away from the cabin.

The key word is “catch.” I was setting up the trap when the phone rang. I went inside to answer it and came back outside to see this guy taking full advantage of the situation.

Curious little Cinnamon-colored Black Bear – Summer 2015.

Seven little ladies doing what ladies do…mid-morning brunch.

A couple of young bucks figuring it all out.

The sunset painting the landscape.

Mule deer

One of the many lakes in the area.

A big guy relaxing in the woodpile. It’s not a good time to get near him because his antlers are in ‘velvet’ and are very sensitive. He can actually feel his antlers during this process. You can actually feel his antlers too if you get too close, but not in a good way. (The Deer Above the Foothills)

Gotta love these guys!

One of the many reasons that you’ve got to love those guys.

Morning dew.

Tired little girl out in the snow.

You tell me what you’re looking at.

Never leave the door open! This guy thought he would make himself at home and enjoy a free feast in the atrium. We had just plucked a mountain load of veggies, and the aroma was a bit too much for this guy to pass up. You can’t blame him.

Close the damn door!

A buck is one thing, but a big old black bear could present its own set of problems if he found his way into an open door.

Lucky for us, this guy was more interested in finding his food the old-fashioned way, out in the wild. Summer 2018.

Like the camouflaged owl, bobcats can appear out of nowhere. Unlike the owl, this guy will give you grief if you cross his path, so it’s always a good idea to take a look around before you step outside.

Yeah, that’s one of them there Hoarfrost things…

Every now and then, we come across a serene, windless, icy-cold morning freeze that, if there is enough moisture present, creates a stunning Hoarfrost—delicate, feathery ice crystals that form on objects when temperatures drop below freezing.

That’s how you start the morning.
